Meant to be a gathering place of statistics from various bureaus and agencies, it has links to those departments and then you search there for stats.
Census Bureau Quickfacts
Not the complete census data, but play with the menus and you can get most everything you need and can compare to states, counties, and cities.

Bureau of Labor Statistics
This site has categories of data arranged on the side. Also has links to foreign government statistic websites.
Data.GOV
The second or third attempt by the US government to make it "easy" to find the statistics that you might want.
USA.GOV
This is NOT a statistics site. This is a site for learning about various government services.

Statistical Abstract of the US: National Data Book
This 1000pg book has many statistics about life in the United States (census and business stats included).

Crime in the USA

FBI's Uniform Crime Report
Look for "Crime Stats" for the most recent year. This will include violent crime. You should be able to find the statistics by state within this document. Under "Violent Crime", table 4 is the breakdown by state.

Under "Region" click on "GDP by State and Metropolitan Area".

Trying to work with Google - State Research

Limit your search by your state's domain.
- "Site:.ca.gov" for example - replace "ca" with your state abbreviation and notice the "." before "ca".
- all results will be from that state's government website

Limit your search by file type (most government documents are pdf or xls)
- "Filetype:pdf" for example - notice no "." before "pdf" or "xls"
- all results will be of that file type

Add the keywords that would be for that particular topic/statistic you are looking for, e.g. "building permits"
