FACULTY GUIDE TO LPU LIBRARY: Reserve Materials

Reserve Policy

Reserves

Each semester, all Library materials that appear on the Academic Department’s Booklist, as well as those that are requested by each professor at his/her discretion, are pulled from their regular housing and placed on Reserves. Additionally, professors may “loan” personal copies, including photocopies, as approved by copyright, of needed materials to the Library’s Reserves.

Shelved behind the Circulation Desk and available specifically to the students who are enrolled in classes these materials support, the check-out period for each of these materials is adjusted according to professors’ requests (one- or two-hour reserve for Library use only with one renewal allowed, or one- or two-night reserve for materials that may leave the Library with no renewal).

The Reserves list/shelf is updated each semester. Just because you requested it for the Fall does not mean it is automatically on reserve for the Spring, it must be requested each term.

Books and book chapters can be listed in our WorldCat Discovery System's "Course Reserves". Right now, the Discovery System is unable to link to articles. We expect that to change in the future.

Textbooks
The Library no longer purchases textbooks. The exception to that policy is if the book is a reference book that could be used in multiple courses.

Digital Reserves - EBSCO

The best method for digital reserves is to link the article that you want the students to read in your Moodle course.

From EBSCO hosted databases, including ATLAS

1) Find the article you want the student to read (make sure it is available as a "PDF Full Text")

2) Click on the title of the article (the blue colored hyperlink)

3) Click on "Permalink" - found on the right-hand side of the screen. This will produce a URL in a box above the title of the article. Copy and paste that URL into Moodle.

Example of a "Permalink":

http://lpc.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=rfh&AN=ATLA0000942838&site=ehost-live

Digital Reserves - ProQuest

The best method for digital reserves is to link the article that you want the students to read in your Moodle course.

From ProQuest hosted databases, including PsycArticles

1) Find the article you want the student read

2) click on the title of the article (the blue colored hyperlink)

3) scroll to the bottom of the article, below the references, but above the tags, to an area called, "Indexing (details). Near the bottom is the "Document URL". (This may be found in the "Abstract/Details" tab for some articles)

4) copy the entire Document URL or DOI and paste it in Moodle.

example of document URL:

http://lpc.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.proquest.com/docview/863766594?accountid=44138

Digital Reserves - Credo Digital Reference

The best method for digital reserves is to link the article that you want the students to read in your Moodle course.

From Credo Digital Reference, including IVP Bible Dictionaries

1) Find the article you want the students to read.

2) Click on the title of the article

3) Click on the "Permalink" (looks like two chain links) - found in upper-right of page, near the "log out" button. This will produce a URL in a box near the top of the screen. Copy and paste that URL into Moodle.

Example of a "Permalink":

http://lpc.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.credoreference.com/content/entry/ivpdjg/economics/0

How To Put a Book (or chapters for a book) or Article on Reserve

Books

Books, not listed as required textbooks from your course outline, may be placed on reserve in the library for up to one semester.

Come into the Library and request a "Reserve Materials Request Form" or fill out the Reserve Form below. If the book is owned by the library, we will remove it from circulation and place it on reserve. If it is your personal copy, you will need to bring it in and we will then put it on the reserve shelf.

The time limit for students to check out the book, for in library use only, can be set to: 1 hour, 2 hours, 1 night, or 2 night.

Chapters

If you desire students to read multiple chapters from a book, an amount exceeding fair use for making copies (greater than 10% of content as a general guideline), the entire book can be placed on reserve.

Articles

If you desire students to read a particular article, that article can be placed in reserves. If a physical copy is desired, it must first go through the copyright check. Once that has happened, bring it into the library and fill out the "Reserve Materials Request Form".

If the article is in digital form (preferred format), then a link to the article can be placed in Moodle; without copyright check.
