Pope (1914–22), born in Pegli, Sardinia, Italy. He studied at the University of Genoa, and the Collegia Capranica in Rome, and was ordained in 1878. He became secretary to the Papal Embassy, Spain, in 1883, then secretary to Cardinal Rampolla, bishop (1900), Archbishop of Bologna (1907), and cardinal (May, 1914).
