FACULTY GUIDE TO LPU LIBRARY: Sources - Beyond LPU's Library

Requesting InterLibrary Loan (ILL)

This is really after you have searched our Library Catalog. Your first option is to look through the results list, in the catalog, and see if anything looks good. Even if the item does not say "Life Pacific University" under "libraries that own this", you do have a chance of getting the item.

First, if the item's "availability" reads "WorldCat", you may still be able to get it.

When you select the title of that item you are taken to its materials page.

Under "Availability/Holdings" there should be a blue box that reads, "Request Item".

If you select that box and then fill in the form, the librarian here, at LPU, will try to get that item for you from another lending library. It will be shipped to you (depending on your patron type and our lending policy for that type). It will also include an envelope, prepaid, to ship it back when the due date arrives.

Visiting another Library

If the idea of waiting for the item does not sit well with you, you have the option of seeing if the item is close enough to you, that you might use it at some other library. LPU does not have lending agreements with every library in the world, so if you find a book in another library, you don't have the right to borrow it. Most academic (college) libraries allow people to browse the shelves and use an item within the walls of their library.

Select the item from your results list that you would like to use and go to the materials page.

Under "Availability/Holdings" you will see a see "Search location". Enter in your address and you will see a list of libraries and their distance from that address.

The links on this list will then connect to that library's catalog. There you can find the call number for the location of that item in that library. With that information you can enter that library and confidently find the book/item in question.

Theses and Dissertations

THESE ARE NOT IN OUR CATALOG, YOU MUST SEARCH THROUGH THEIR WEBSITES

Theses and dissertations are the writings submitted at the conclusion of doctoral programs and some masters programs. Each institution has its own guidelines for length and style. These collections are Open Access. That means that the author has retained the copyright, but that their material is freely available, instead of being part of a paid subscription service database.
