About this Libguide

This LibGuide is devoted to techniques used in digital searching using search engines. Each of the techniques is discussed in relationship to general use search engines, such as Google or Bing, as well as our various library search engines (WorldCat, EBSCO, ProQuest, et al.).

The Basic Search Techniques page discusses the most common and easy to use. Results will be more precise and relevant if you use these simple techniques.

The Advanced Search Techniques page discusses some more advanced tools and how they will shape the results. These tools will narrow or broaden your results as necessary, but will also provide amazingly accurate results.

The Expert Search Techinques page will discuss citation tracing. This tool, useful for graduate students and faculty doing research, will allow a person to trace an arguement historically and discover other materials that are related by footnotes. It is cumbersome and time consuming, but if necessary for a thesis, dissertation, or publication will be well worth the effort.

The last page, How a Search Engine Works, explains how a search engine works and how that helps you understand these various techniques.
